About Us

A reading of Molière, Jean François de Troy, c. 1728

Our Purpose:

Our founder, Alexis, has always loved history, but it took many years for her to gain the skills needed to understand antiquated handwriting, French manuscripts, and jargon-filled academic texts. History is the story of humanity. We believe that every human being should have access to high-quality historical content, regardless of their education level. If scholarship is accessible only to trained academics, then that’s really not accessible at all, right? The Alexicon aims to make history understandable, relevant, and educational to the general public.

Why the 18th Century?

The 18th century was a time rich in everything from war to literature, fashion to philosophy. Enlightenment philosophy developed during this period, encompassing many of the ideas which continue to shape our modern governments and ethical standards. Furthermore, the growth of European Empires established (for better or worse) systems which have become the foundation of modern economy and defined many of the national borders which exist today. By learning about this particular niche of the past, we enable ourselves to better understand the present.

We are hoping to, over the next few years, expand the platform to cover European history from 1300-1800, but this is a massive project that must happen in phases. Your readership enables us to continue towards this goal, so thank you for joining our community!

Furthermore, history-related inquiries, suggestions, collaboration requests, etc. are always welcome. If you’re a student, I’m happy to look over essays or give humanities-related class/college advice. Just contact me below!
